Cannon Constructors was awarded this challenging alteration project to convert an existing freestanding retail structure into a 50's style restaurant. The existing 10,000 SF retail store was situated in the middle of the Mission Valley Shopping Center, in San Diego. Because of its location in the shopping center, we were afforded minimal access to the site, which added major logistical and scheduling difficulty to this project. In order to build the restaurant, the existing building had to be stripped down to the structural framing. The structural framing had to be reconfigured to the shape of the new restaurant. A new glass and architectural stucco finish as well as a new roof were added to the exterior of the building. At the exterior patio area, a decorative metal sculpture in the shape of the 1939 New York Worlds Fair sphere was installed. The interior was designed as a fifty's cafe with seating at the counter and booths with the capacity of 150 people. All of the interior components were modeled after an authentic fifty's caf‚ right down to the 20 foot high rotating Ruby in the center of the restaurant. A new 2,000 SF cooking line and kitchen were also installed, including "make-up air" and exhaust systems.
